Marketing is one of many spokes in the wheel of business

Avoid the marketing speed wobbles!

Imagine you have a bicycle wheel with 24 spokes but 5 of them are missing. If you replace just 1 spoke, is it going to fix the wheel and make it run true?

Well the same goes for business, and marketing is just one of the spokes in your wheel of business success.

Sure – you need to have your marketing plan and execution sorted, but if you are still missing 4 other spokes in your wheel it’s going to wobble like crazy, especially if you try to speed it up with a big arse-kicking marketing campaign.

I often see business owners who come to me for help with digital marketing, thinking that it’s going to revolutionise their business by bringing in more leads. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t, but it’s not usually the fault of the advertising campaigns or marketing strategy.

Sometimes more leads can actually be detrimental to a business if the rest of the spokes are not all attached and tensioned correctly.

For example, if we put more load on a sales team that isn’t prepared for the volume of new enquiry, or a logistics team that can’t keep up with demand, or a production team that isn’t ready to scale up production, then you can risk damaging your brand by not delivering what new customers expect.

Another common one is if the website isn’t ready to handle different types of user journeys and conversion points, or capture leads that aren’t quite ready to buy (so they can be nurtured) then advertising budgets can be wasted, which can have a big impact on the businesses financial situation. It also impacts their confidence in marketing and advertising agencies, which I see a LOT of.

So, take some time to think about what other spokes in your business need to be replaced, tuned up or checked over before spending up large on a new marketing strategy or campaign execution.

I help businesses to build their in-house digital marketing expertise through training and coaching, and I also understand the wider aspects of running a business which means I don’t send them on wild goose chases that end up in disappointment or wasted budget spend.

Make sure all the spokes are tuned up before spinning the wheel and you’ll have a much better chance of avoiding the speed wobbles!
